This series contains the papers of the Sugar Industry Labour Commission. A Royal Commission was appointed to inquire into and report upon the deportation and repatriation of Pacific Islanders and the sufficiency of labour for the Queensland Sugar Industry. The Commission was also known as 'The Kanaka Commission' and 'The Polynesian Deportation Commission'. Members were R.A. Ranking, Esq. MLA (Chairman), W.T. Paget, Esq. MLA, and C.F. Nielson, MLA. The Commission travelled to North Queensland conducting hearings in sugar producing districts. The Commission's Report was tabled in Parliament on 30 Jun 1906. The papers appear to belong to the Secretary of the Commission, Mr. James (Jas) Brennan, an officer of the Chief Secretary's Office and are mainly of an administrative nature. Included are some written submissions such as evidence from the Chief Protector of Aboriginals regarding the deportation of 'Kanakas' married to Aboriginal females and a list of names and places of residence of some of the Pacific Islanders working in the sugar industry in Queensland.
