Ipswich Technical College commenced classes on 31 August 1891 after a resolution was passed at the meeting of the Technical College Committee. Technical colleges outside of Brisbane were limited neither by statute nor by regulation. Under the "Technical Instruction Act and Amendment Acts of 1908 - 1918" control of the colleges was gradually transferred to the Department of Public Instruction. The Board of Technical Education was established in early 1902. This Board reported matters to the Dept. of Public Instruction and advised the Minister on matters relating to the Technical Colleges. However due to disagreements between the Colleges, the Board and the Department, the Board was abolished in 1905 and the Dept of Public Instruction took over control of the Colleges.

In July 1951, when the Ipswich State High School opened, the College was called the Ipswich High and Technical College, as at this time State High Schools functioned in the existing Technical Colleges under one Principal with a joint staff.

On 1 January 1963, the High School section was separated from the Technical College section and the name reverted to Ipswich Technical College.

On 1 January 1977, with introduction of the TAFE system in Queensland, Ipswich Technical College became the Ipswich College of Technical and Further Education (TAFE)
