As early as 1898 attempts had been made to establish a school at Downfall Creek. Downfall Creek State School No. 929 in the North Brisbane area opened as a class VII school on 9th July 1900 . James Youatt was appointed first Head Teacher, with an enrolment of 90 students. In 1903 Downfall Creek State School was renamed Chermside State School No.929. In 1988 the school had only 72 enrolments and four teachers, and falling attendance resulted in the closure of the school in 1996.

NOTE: Downfall Creek State School No.1550 opened on the Juandah Railway Branch in Central Queensland in 1917.
