Description
Mantaka State School opened as Welcome Pocket Provisional School on 5 February 1892 with the transference of Lizzie Coman as its first Head Teacher on that date. Although the school began with the school number "653", in 1894 the number was changed to "144". On 1 January 1909, Welcome Creek Provisional School was proclaimed a State School. In December 1912 Welcome Pocket underwent a name-change to Mantaka State School. In 1920 the school was temporarily closed after it was "blown down" and its teacher transferred to Tolga School on 9 February 1920 until the school could be reopened. Mantaka State School closed permanently on 4 February 1946 when its last teacher, John Douglas Wilson, was transferred to Ingham Rural on that date, this being the final listing of "Mantaka" in the Teacher Returns.
