A school on Murray Island was first opened on 17 April 1892. Between 1896 and 1903 it was under the control of the Department for Public Instruction. In 1903 a decision was made that the Home Secretary's Office would take control of the school, and the Secretary for Public Instruction directed removal of the name of the school from the books of the department. When the Chief Protector of Aboriginals' Office was established in 1904, that Office took control of aboriginal schools.

In 1928 a new school, capable of accommodating 140 pupils, was built at Murray Island.

On 29 January 1985, the primary schools previously under the control of the Department of Community Services, were transferred to the Department of Education, and the school on Murray Island became Murray Island State School.

In 1990, the Parents and Citizens' Association of Murray Island State School requested that the name of the school be changed from Murray Island State School to Mer State School. The request was granted in October 1990.

On 1 January 2007 Mer State School became Tagai State College - Mer Campus.
