Whilst it appears that infants (including boys under the age of 8) were separated from the older pupils prior to 28 September 1874*, it is from this date that girls attending the Townsville State School were transferred to the newly completed Townsville Girls State School No. 257. The boys remained in the original school buildings. A separate Head Teacher was appointed to each school.

From 1881, the school was known as the Townsville Girls and Infants State School.

Special classes for "backward" children were provided by a dedicated teacher from about the 1930s.

As of 30 June 1936, the Central State Boys and the Central State Girls and Infants schools were re-amalgamated to form the Townsville Central State School.

*Although the opening date of the new Girls "department" is not noted in the Department's Annual Report, the school admission registers note that the girls were transferred on 28th September 1874.
