Lyra State School opened after 7 November 1929 with an enrolment of 10 pupils when the teacher, Kathleen May O'Donohue, was transferred from Booie School on that date. The school site was donated by Evan Hindmarsh, with the school building coming from the closed Applevale School, and the furniture being transferred from the closed Somme State School. The school closed 19 June 1966, with students being transferred to Ballandean State School.
