Ministerial approval was granted for a provisional school on 1 August 1898. Elgin Vale Provisional School No 864 opened via Nanango at Wetheron on the Gayndah line in May 1899. The first Head Teacher was Elizabeth Sheridan. The school closed in 1905. By 24 January 1927, the Elgin Vale Provisional School, allocated a new number 1555 (formerly the Sefton school number), reopened. The former Sefton Provisional School No.1555 closed with the school building being removed to Elgin Vale. The Head Teacher was Kathleen Courtney.

In 1948 the Elgin Vale School became a class 4 State School by gazettal proclamation due the increased attendances in 1947.
