Townsville State School No. 113 was opened in 1869. The school was housed in buildings that formerly belonged to the hospital, and accommodated both boys and girls.

By 1874, enrolments had swelled to 224 forcing the school to build additional accommodation. At the same time, the school was divided into separate girls and boys "departments." The new girls' school had a separate number (257), separate teachers and a separate principal. From 28 September 1874 the school became known as the Townsville State Boys or Townsville Central State Boys School.
