Maryborough State School (Number 72) opened during 1862 as a vested school. Initially, the school comprised both boys and girls and would seem to have been divided into a department for each. About 1874 the school separated officially into two distinct schools: the Maryborough Central Boys School (which retained the number 72) and the Maryborough Central Girls' and Infants' School (School number 249). The latter school divided into separate Girls' and Infants' schools at the beginning of 1878.

On 29 July 1932, the Maryborough Central Boys' School and the Maryborough Central Girls' School both closed and reopened on 15 August as a mixed school, once again called Maryborough Central State School.

N.B An exact date for the official separation of the school into the Maryborough Central State Boys' School and the Maryborough Central State Girls' and Infants' School is difficult to ascertain. The earliest admission register for the boys' only school begins 26 January 1874. However, the first enrolment on the register for the Girls' and Infants' School starts on 30 March 1875.
