On 1 Jan 1949 the Public Instruction Department was de-centralised and the state was divided into regions including the Central Region with headquarters in Rockhampton. On 12 August 1957 the Public Instruction Department became the Education Department.

The regional offices were responsible for administration within their areas with some general control over education including the transfer of teachers.

The Queensland Government Directory 1992 stated that "regional teams manage the development and delivery of educational programs to preschool, primary, secondary school and special school students".

Each region was headed by a Regional Director of Education residing in the city or town designated as headquarters, but being responsible to the Director - General of Education. Regular conferences were held by the Regional Directors, and by the Regional Directors with the Director - General to discuss matters of policy, administration and educational standards.

In 1991 the region became the Capricornia Region and was expanded to include the Mackay area.

The regions were abolished in 1998 and the Capricornia Region was divided into five districts: Gladstone, Rockhampton, Emerald, Mackay Hinterland and Mackay North.
