Description
In August 1889 the residents in and around Sunbury held a meeting for the purposes of considering the advisability of establishing a state school in the locality. The District Inspector, Mr Walter Scott, inspected the area in September 1889 and recommended that a State School for about 70 children be established on a 10 acre block of land on the Gayndah Road.

The Sunbury State School was opened on 18 January 1891 by the Head Teacher, Mr Stotter, who remained as Head Teacher until 11 November 1900. The enrolment for the March quarter of 1891 was 69 pupils. The school remained on the same site until a new site and a new school was established.

The new Sunbury School was completed on 14 January 1958. The enrolment for February 1958 was 131 pupils.
