Description
ESTABLISHMENT:
The school opened as a Vested school for both boys and girls on 12 December 1871 with the first registration of pupils, and was called Mackay Primary School (in Votes and Proceedings 1872, the school is referred to as "Mackay School", and in the school register as "Mackay Primary School"). Consisting of a new wooden building and detached teacher's residence on 5 acres, the school soon achieved an average daily attendance of 41 pupils. In 1872 the school became known as Port Mackay Primary School until at least 13 December 1875, reverting back to "Mackay Primary School".

ABOLITION:
On 28 September 1885, the school became a boys' only school and a register was begun for enrolled pupils. At this time the school was renamed Mackay Boys' Primary School. In 1887 Mackay Boys' Primary School underwent a second name-change to Mackay Boys State School.

Throughout the school's history, it kept the school number '71', which was passed on to the new Mackay Boys' Primary School/Mackay Boys State School.
