Description
ESTABLISHMENT:
The Commission of inquiry into circumstances surrounding certain matters relating to Robert Andrew Somerville was established by an Order In Council dated 29 March 1972.

The inquiry sat over 20 days between 13 April and 18 May, 1972 and the Commission's report was tabled in Parliament on 22 June 1972 .

The Commission was to investigate allegations made by Robert Andrew Somerville that he was wrongfully held in Wolston Park Hospital beyond his period of sentence, and to submit a report and recommendations to the Minister for Health, based on its findings.

In its terms of reference, the Commission was to investigate the facts and circumstances surrounding Robert Somerville's admission to Her Majesty's Prison, Brisbane, his transfer to and treatment at Wolston Park Hospital, the circumstances surrounding Somerville's requests for leave, his absences without leave from the hospital, his subsequent transfer to Wacol Rehabilitation Clinic, and his treatment and eventual release from the latter.

The Inquiry found that no institution had acted improperly.
