Description

This series contains the Mines Department's copies of the papers of the Royal Commission appointed to inquire into certain matters relating to the State Coal Mine, Collinsville. In addition to discovering the cause of the accident where seven mine workers were killed, the Royal Commission also had to consider if factors such as management, workmen's attitudes, and mechanisation of the mine could have contributed to the accident. The Royal Commission was also asked to recommend if the mine should continue operation or be closed down. The series includes transcripts and exhibits of the Royal Commission, briefs to counsels, conference and deputation papers, statements and reports of witnesses, financial reports, reports and statistics of mines, newspaper articles, correspondence and other papers. Not all records in this series originated with the Royal Commission. Item 1245546 comprises reports created later and added to the series by the Department.
