System of Arrangement Roughly alphabetical by name of subject ie. all the As are together. Subject headings used are not always consistent eg. references to the Australian Institute of Medicine can be found under both 'A' and 'I' so all possible subject headings should be checked. The bulk of the entries are for the time period 1909 - 1914. In fact there are only two references in 1907, one in 1908, none between 1915 - 1921 and one in 1922.

Description

This register is a very select and partial index to the general inwards correspondence of the Premier and Chief Secretary's Department. A wide range of subjects are included eg. army pensions, anti-plague serum, bush nursing, Burketown Custom House, chilled meat export, Charters Towers rifle range, deserters from Japanese ships, Empire Day celebrations, Fallen Soldiers Memorial Fund, food and drugs standards, Gulf mail service, grasshoppers (destruction of), Hungerford bore, insurance on motor cars, Jarvisfield sugar mill, King Edward memorial, Leprosy Congress report, Mount Coot-tha reserve, meat for Switzerland, North Quay land, Opium Convention, postage stamps, quarantine stations, Russian immigrants etc.

The index gives a letter number (usually not the top-number) which should be consulted in the appropriate inwards correspondence register and if necessary, followed through till the top-number is reached. N.B. Only a very small proportion of correspondence appears to have been subject indexed for this period.
