This series consists of minutes of, and depositions taken in cases heard in the Court of Petty Sessions, Brisbane. The Court had broad jurisdiction in minor criminal and civil matters, as well as authority to hear cases which came under the jurisdiction of the Revision Court, Police Court, Licensing Court.
Details entered for each case include: the date, before whom heard, the charge, those appearing for the plaintiff and defendant, statements taken on oath, plea, the verdict -including fines- and the signature of the Magistrate. Not all cases included depositions. In some instances, particularly where a plea of not guilty was entered, statements, names of witnesses and lists of evidence tendered were also recorded . Applications for various licences could also be included in the minutes.
The cases heard could include drunkenness, disorderly conduct, being of unsound mind, assault, vagrancy, insulting or obscene language, violently resisting arrest, creating a disturbance, malicious damage to property, arson, theft, larceny, false pretences, defamation, petty debts, deserting service, child desertion, applications for licenses, non-payment of wages, supply of alcohol and opium to Aborigines, breaches of Education, Stock, Liquor, Slaughtering Election and Animal and Bird Acts, stealing and possession of stolen property, unlawful use of horses and horse stealing, unlawful possession of hides, carcasses and timber, riding bicycles on footpaths, playing unlawful games eg. American Pool, applications for ejectment, prohibition orders, etc.
