Description

This series provides a record of cases initiated by police and brought before the Court of Petty Sessions (later the Magistrates Court) at Hungerford. Details recorded in these two volumes include arrest number, date and hour of arrest, name of the prisoner, age, occupation, country (of origin) and religion of the prisoner, offence or cause of action, articles found on the prisoner, signature of the watchhouse keeper, signature of the arresting officer, bail granted, how the case was disposed of, name of the presiding magistrate and the outcome of the action. From 1965, at the same time as Courts of Petty Sessions became known as Magistrates Courts, the Police charge bench book became known as the bench record book (arrests). The Court of Petty Sessions also acted as the Police Court and the Children's Court. In many cases, charges are listed under the name of the particular court to which the case was referred.
