Each register (except for that of 1861 - 1865) contains an alphabetical index by name of accused, usually in the front of the register (some are separate booklets which may be in the back)
How To Use Series Consult the index for the year, name and register page number. Locate the page in the register and note the court place and trial date. Proceed to the series of depositions for that place or relevant court district. Search the item list for the year and number. Request the item. (Sometimes the numbers do not match the deposition file numbers, so it may be necessary to search the files of the year required or previous and subsequent years).

Description

This series consists of registers of criminal depositions received by the Crown Solicitor's Office, later Solicitor General's Office . Each double-page of the three registers 1861 - 30 May 1887 is headed "depositions etc received", but from 1 June 1887 the registers contain the heading (with some variations over time) "list of persons committed for trial or sentence at the several criminal courts of the state, together with statement of the result of the trial during the year...". Under this heading, entry details also vary over time but usually include: number, name of accused, offence for which committed, committing magistrate and bench, place of trial, when, court, witnesses, bail, depositions when received, despatched to, when, judge, verdict, sentence and date of sentence or discharge, and remarks. Adjournments are included while applications for leave to appeal are noted in red.

The Courts are the Supreme Court, and Circuit Courts and District Courts in various places throughout the state.
