Description

This series consists of male patients' case books of the Woogaroo Asylum (for the mentally insane) and, from 1878, the Ipswich Special Hospital. The following information is included:
General: name of patient, date of admission, number in register, form of mental disorder, causes.
Personal: age, marital status, social condition, children, occupation, place of birth, religion, duration of attack, previous attack, date of last admission.
Medical: date, copy of medical certificate, previous history of physical illness or mental disease, family history, physical condition on admission, history of present attack, periodical record of the patient's condition.

Included also are numerous loose letters written mainly by patients. The index at the front sometimes indicates date of death, transfers or discharges, and annotations if the patient served in the armed forces, in Australia or overseas. Often there is post mortem information on the cause of death.
