Description

This series consists of correspondence received and sent by the Chief Secretary's Department and its successors, the Premier and Chief Secretary's Department then Premier's Department. From 1904 onwards, items in this series include copies of outward correspondence attached to the inward letter under reply.

The correspondence covers the major functions of the department and its responsibility for whole-of-government policy, legislation etc., and includes letters from premiers of other states, the prime minister, other departmental heads, the governor, defence commanders, local government, various commercial, industrial and community organisations and individuals. Subjects include government appointments and administration, protocol, state development, trade and contracts, New Guinea, immigration, military affairs, premiers' conferences, etc.

Not all correspondence is included in this series. A separate series of Batch Files contains letters arranged in batches according to their subject.
