System of Arrangement Items 512041-4: These registers relate only to Miscellaneous Files. The first volume is an index only, providing file number and name. Volumes 2-4 are chronological registers that include an index at the front. The other volumes relate to Originating Summonses, Miscellaneous Files and other series; entries are alphabetical.
Departmental numbers: from 1857 to 1883 file numbers are 1-694; from June 1883 to December 1896 file numbers are 1-1798; from 1897 onwards there are annual running file numbers.
How To Use Series Researchers of any series of civil files may find these registers useful. To begin a search, the researcher should know the full name of the person who lodged the application (ie. petition, motion, deed poll, originating summons, etc.), as well as the year. Within the register/index for that year locate the person's surname and note the file number. To locate the files consult the appropriate controlled series.
