These batch files consist of correspondence that was received by the Health & Home Affairs Department. The Office of the Chief Protector of Aboriginals and later the Office of the Director of Native Affairs were sub-departments of the Health and Home Affairs Department until 1962, at which time control of the sub-department was transferred to the Department of Education and Migration.

The records are in the forms of letters, memos, circulars, notes, telegrams, reports, lists, surveys and booklets. and relate to the administration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander affairs in general, such as : reserves, missions and settlements; Fantome Island Lazaret; Protectors; finance; taxation; general administration; staff; transport; health; removals and exemptions; employment, pensions, wages; education; courses, conferences, seminars and conventions; annual reports; inspection reports; census; surveys; audit reports; police; legislation; regulations; submissions to Government; housing; stock and farming; supplies; boats; various Boards and Associations; Lands Department; pearl shell industry; repatriation; racism; OPAL Scheme; some files on individuals and several other miscellaneous matters.
