This series contains two types of receipts books for payment of licenses for exhumation permits issued to remove a body in public land throughout Queensland. One type issues numbered receipts generally titled License to Remove a Body, "Cemetery Act 1865" with headings: Date, Applicant, Deceased, For Removal from, To, and are initialled. The receipts are pre-printed with Fee Paid: £1. On most receipt butts there is a handwritten note on payment received, with a file reference number. In some instances there is other information - such as an attached list of persons, or a note on the waiver of payment. Included amongst applicant names are entries such as funeral director, solicitor, Cemetery Trust, Shire Council, Public Curator, representative from the Imperial War Graves Commission. Entries indicate exhumation for reasons such as: change to another grave in the same cemetery, cremation, transfer of the body to another cemetery within Queensland, interstate or overseas to countries including China and Japan. Some receipt books include letters relating to the permit application, folded in the back.
The second type of receipt book issues licenses titled: Exhumation Permit to Remove a Body. "The Cremation Acts, 1913 to 1935." with headings: Date, Applicant, Deceased, For removal from, To be cremated at. It may be include a handwritten note on payment received, with a file reference number. Noted inside the front cover of this receipt book: Must be buried one year otherwise Cremation Regulations apply.
