Information Sources

This series contains oaths and affirmations of office and allegiance for persons employed in various positions within the Queensland State Government. An Oath of Office was taken to pledge to execute their position to the best of their ability. Within this series in many instances the same person would also swear an Oath of Allegiance to the King or Queen at the same time as their Oath to Office. In some cases a person performed an Affirmation of office or allegiance. There is no major difference in legal force between an oath and an affirmation. The basic difference is that oaths conclude with the phrase ‘So help me God!’ while those making an affirmation are required to solemnly and sincerely affirm and declare with religion not included.

Most of the oaths and affirmations include; swearing on their ability and the name of the position appointed to, where sworn in and the date; the allegiance is sworn to the king or queen, and both are signed by the person who is making the oath or affirmation. These were at some point bound together but have since been separated. Where pages are not used there is no description for them. In some cases the signature of the person has been cut away and removed for unknown reasons. These Oaths of Allegiance are not to be mistaken with the same Oaths performed by people making Oaths during Naturalisation.
