Description

Under the Infant Life Protection Act 1905, every person/organisation wishing to have premises used as a 'nursing home' needed to register the premises and renew the registration annually in December. Children received in care had to be provided with "proper and sufficient food, nursing, and attention, and with all other necessaries of life, and to keep every part of the nursing home at all times in a fit and proper state for the reception of infants." Some applications were rejected after inspection, or withdrawn by the applicants after a certain time.

This series consists of two sets of indexes to registered premises and case histories:

1) This set is labelled 'Old Registered Premises' (buff-coloured cards 1906 to 1985). Information given includes the name and address of persons or institutions providing premises to house children, registration number (preceded by 'A'), the date of first registration, a section for dated remarks regarding the status of the premises (i.e.application received/cancelled, certificate of registration issued, etc.), and general remarks. The reverse of the card was used to note particulars of children on roll, such as name of child, date of admission to the premises and child registration number.

2) This set is labelled "Registered Premises" (mostly green-coloured cards 1962 to 1996). Information given includes the name and address of persons or institutions that owned the premises, registration number (preceded by 'A'), a reference/registration number, the issuing station (a suburb), category (Registration of Premise), date of birth of carers where applicable, and detail of payments (date, amount, voucher, remarks), if applicable.

At the back of the first index there are a few summary cards regarding premises:
- Admitted children 1976-1977 (Premise registration/file number, date, child's name, address) (1 card)
- Discharged children 1976-1977 (Premise registration/file number, date, child's name, registered persons) (1 card)
- Applications to register 1975-1977 (Premise registration/file number, date, name, address) (2 cards)
- Applications approved 1976-1977 (Premise registration/file number, date, name, address) (1 card)
- Certificates cancelled 1975-1977 (Premise registration/file number, date, name, address) (2 cards)
