The "Commission of Inquiry into the care and treatment of patients in the psychiatric unit of the Townsville General Hospital" was to investigate whether between 1975 to 1988 any patient in the Psychiatric Unit (Ward 10B) was cared for or treated in a manner which was negligent, unsafe, unethical or unlawfull, and if so, to establish whether there was sufficient evidence to prosecute or take disciplinary proceedings. The final report can be found in items 1515067 and 1515068 of series 19428.
This series consists of some of the records collected by the Commission of Inquiry from the Townsville General Hospital, the Psychiatric Unit/Ward 10B and the Health Department in the course of its investigations. The records were incorporated and numbered into the Inquiry's records system; however, after the Inquiry was finalised, they were returned to the Health Department.
This series include numerous diaries, log books, daily ward report books, admission registers, occupational therapy roll books, security rounds books, incident report books, etc; copies of reports bout nursing audit , Psychiatric Unit review of records, and Townsville Hospital Board/Townsville General Hospital/Psychiataric Unit (Ward 10B) papers (Vols 1, 2, 3). Other items include: patients' medical records, correspondence, policy and procedure papers, some administrative files, and various other hospital records that were used as exhibits or part of submissions, as well as 3 boxes of videotapes and computer floppy disks with hospital information and computer backups (some un-labelled).
