The images in these albums were created by the Photographic Section of the Survey Office of the Lands Department, and its successor agencies, on behalf of various Government departments (eg. Public Works and Housing, Local Government, Health, Civil Aviation, Labour and Industry, Harbours and Marine, Primary Industries, etc). The Photographic Section provided photographic services to Government departments who used these photographs for record, educational, promotional and exhibition purposes. Thus this series documents a wide range of Government departments and functions.
Among the images included in these albums are photographs of land development and reclamation, pest and weed control, country towns, soldier settlements, dam construction (including dams at Koombooloomba, Tinaroo, Barcaldine, Little Nerang and North Pine), agricultural machinery and equipment, Royal National Association exhibits, civil aviation equipment, public buildings (including libraries, schools, colleges, universities and hospitals etc), Eventide Home and Housing Commission estates, police stations, courts and prisons, official openings of buildings, bridges and Parliament, the Royal visits of 1954 and 1958, members of Parliament and the Public Service, and festivals and parades.
Apart from volume 26, which contains some colour prints, the photographs are black and white.
