This collection of maps is an artificial series created by Queensland State Archives. For location purposes, the series brings together often unrelated maps drawn to the same (or approximate) scale. These maps were sometimes single items collected from various sources while some maps were removed from other record series and incorporated into the scale maps series.
Maps in the Queensland State Archives scale maps series generally show Australia or Queensland as a whole, though there are some series in which sheets representing different geographical areas form a composite map of the state.
The scale maps series include reproductions of maps of historical interest, as well as maps showing many aspects of Queensland history, life and development. There are depictions, for example, of physical features, state forests and national parks, weather patterns, exploration, towns, land tenure and usage, particularly primary industry and mining, irrigation and water resources, transport such as railways, roads, and stock routes, and communication such as telegraph lines.
