The black and white negatives in this series were created by the Photography Section of the Survey Office, and its successor agencies, and recorded in the general registers of work produced (QS170 and QS171). The Photography Section provided photographic services on behalf of each branch of the Lands Department, as well as many other government departments (including Premier's, Works, Health and Home Affairs, Harbours and Marine, and various Electricity Authorities). Images such as the ones included in this series were used for record, educational, promotional and exhibition purposes.
Among the photographs is this series are images of Queensland's early development (including land clearing and cultivation, livestock farming, road construction and mining), public works (including hospitals, schools, housing estates and government offices), visiting dignitaries, country townships, Brisbane scenes and other attractions, including the Torres Strait Islands.
Copies of prints produced from this series appear in QS185, QS175 and QS176.
