The Works Department was responsible for the construction of government buildings. In addition to correspondence relating to new buildings, extensions, renovations and maintenance, files may also include plans (architectural drawings), specifications, contracts, and land transactions. This series covers not only major government buildings in the cities but also government buildings and residences in towns and country localities. i.e. buildings that would enable government departments to run their business throughout the State.
Brisbane buildings include the Executive Building, Government House, Government Printing Office, Taxation Building, Art Gallery and Museum, Old Trades Hall, Parliament House, Public Library, State Archives, Treasury Building, University of Queensland, Anzac Square and S.G.I.O.
This series includes powder magazines, experimental and research stations, grammar schools, state butcher shops, Aboriginal settlements, soldier settlement, immigration buildings, prisons, forestries, air-raid shelters and other war-time buildings (1942 - 1945 period), rent control offices, cyclone damages, hostels and teachers' colleges.
