Most of the images in this series are 252 mm x 200 mm black and white glass plate negatives. There are also a number of cellulose acetate collodion (wet plate) negatives. These images were created by the Photograhy Section of the Survey Office, and its successor agencies, on behalf of each branch of the Lands Department, as well as many other government agencies.
Apart from the Lands Department, work was undertaken for the Harbours and Marine, Labour and Industry, Health and Home Affairs, and Public Works Departments. Such images were produced for promotional, educational, record and exhibition purposes.
This series of negatives includes images of farms (small crops, livestock, fruit, etc.), mining sites, coastal road constructions, housing and country towns, panoramic views of Brisbane and its landmarks, and the Torres Strait Islands.
