This series consists of correspondence received by the Sheriff of Queensland, in his capacity as administrator of all Queensland prisons, and afterwards by the Comptroller General of Prisons. From 1 Jan 1891, after the passing of the "Prisons Act of 1890", the Prisons Department took over the work of the Sheriff's Office with regard to prison administration, although in practice this officially happened from 1 Sep 1893, when the first Comptroller General of Prisons was appointed.

This correspondence relates to the administration of the prison system throughout Queensland, to prisoners generally, to particular prisoners, criminal histories, petitions, remission of sentences, recognisances and particulars of sentences, transfer of prisoners, prison returns etc., as well as administrative matters, court matters, prison maintenance and supplies, staff, visitors, inspections, etc.

Most letters are registered, in-coming correspondence (there are also some copies of out-going letters interspersed throughout); letters are pinned together in related topics (top-number system), however some have been collected together in bigger files (although not extracted for the "batch" series). Letter numbers can be found under Departmental Number.

In this series there are three groups of general correspondence. The date ranges for the three groups overlap by some years. The reason for the existence of three separate groups is not apparent, since most subject matters are represented in all three groups, and letters are addressed to the Sheriff/Comptroller General in all three groups.

(a) Correspondence marked "PRI/A" (1865-1929)

(b) Correspondence marked "A/19501-A/19610" (1891-1934)

(c) Correspondence marked "A/19929-A/19950" (1885-1947)

These three groups - together with the batched series (9097) complement each other to give a general view of the management of prisons from 1865 to the 1940s.
