This series consists of registers of correspondence received by the Comptroller General of Prisons, and forwarded to other Departments with an opinion/decision made by the Comptroller. These registers were also called "Minute Books".
In general, around the turn of the 20th century, letters received were registered:
(a) in the main Registers of Incoming Correspondence (series 15189), whether they were forwarded or not to other Departments
(b) when letters required an opinion/decision by the Sheriff/Comptroller, they were registered in the "Minute Books" (this series, 15184, not to be confused with minutes of meetings)
(c) some letters were registered in both sets
The volumes in this series - (b) - provide the following information: date, letter number, from whom, subject, minute (opinion or decision taken), to whom forwarded, and when forwarded.
