Description

This series consists of letterbooks of the Sheriff of Queensland, in his capacity as administrator of prisons, and of the Comptroller General of Prisons (from 1891), containing copies of letters to Heads of Departments.

All letterbooks have an index at the front; the index in PRI/G63 includes date, letter number, folio, to whom addressed, and subject; the rest of the volumes only state the page number and subject, and a list of all Departments where letters have been sent. For each letter, the following details are included: the addressee and the sender, date, the letter number, the body of the letter, and signature.

The main government Departments where letters were sent were the Colonial Secretary, Colonial Treasurer, Colonial Storekeeper, Colonial Architect, Auditor General, Commissioner of Police, Railways Commissioner, Civil Servants Board, Works Department, Justice Department, Post and Telegraph Department, Government Printer, Registrar General, Sheriff of Queensland and the Agriculture Department.
