Description

The "Agricultural Reserves Act of 1863" repealed sections 10, 11 and 13 of the "Alienation of Crown Lands Act 1860" and set out new provisions under which land in Agricultural Reserves could be purchased and leased. The Leasing Act of 1866 enabled land not sold at auction nor purchased by selection to be leased 30 days after the auction. If the land was in an Agricultural Reserve, conditions relating to land selected in Reserves were applied.

These files are for land taken up under the Acts of 1863 and 1866. Some have Deeds of Grant issued prior to the passing of the 1868 Act, they were not brought under the provisions of that Act. In some instances they applied for the Deed of Grant many years after taking up the land, and early documents are not with the file.

The files include applications to lease, descriptions, applications to purchase, applications for deeds of grant, reports from bailiffs, statutory declarations concerning improvements, correspondence - especially where some time had elapsed before the application for the deed was made or where the selector was deceased - transfers, certificates of fulfilment of conditions, proof of fulfilment of conditions, deeds of grant. Some application forms have annotations regarding land orders. Some application forms have a section on the back about the form of payment. Where land orders were used these are noted with the amounts and sometimes the numbers.
