System of Arrangement Chronological by year then, within the subject arrangement for each register, numerical and chronological by annual running number and date of letter. Letters were "top - numbered" so references may continue within a register and between subjects, and then continue to subsequent yearly registers.
How To Use Series Consult these registers for the subject and year/s required to obtain access to the numbers and year of the items in the controlled series. Researchers should carefully follow and note the subsequent letter numbers until the final number entered ("top-number"), then request the item from the controlled series for the year and number range. It is advisable to check the annotations in the "remarks" columns of the registers for any comments (such as, Away batch) that may indicate the location of the particular correspondence.
For registers prior to 1904 that have been split into several parts, consult the subject/section listing found in the Item Extended Description to assist in selection of the correct part. Where page numbers are available for each part, they have also been provided. If there is no listing in the Item Extended Description, the volume will cover all subjects/sections for that year.

Information Sources

This series consists of registers kept by the Home Secretary's Office for registration of inwards correspondence.

Prior to 1904, the registers were originally single annual volumes, containing (mostly) alphabetically arranged subjects, functions or agencies for which the Home Secretary was responsible, and alphabetical alphabetical listing, A-Z, of letters from various individuals and organisations. These original large volumes have been re-bound into smaller parts, and listed as separate items for ease of access.

From about 1904, there are several registers for each year, subject arranged into general, charitable relief, benevolent asylums, and institutional etc. (various institutions such as Blind, Deaf and Dumb Institute, Diamantina Hospital, Dunwich and Charters Towers Benevolent Asylums as well as broader headings such as prisoners, relief and indigents etc.).

Each entry within a register provides the number of the letter, the numbers of any previous or subsequent correspondence, the date of the letter and of its registration, the author and subject of the letter and the action taken.
