Description

This series consists of batch files containing correspondence and papers relating to the Public Works Department's responsibility for the design, construction, landscaping, renovation and maintenance of public buildings, as well as for fit-outs of offices, school-rooms, laboratories and other specialised workrooms of public agencies. Documents include specifications and plans; contracts and quotations; forms such as district office reports, reports and estimates, urgent work required, and production orders; and correspondence related to planning programs, project development, agency requirements, costings, supply of materials and equipment, engagement of architects, consultants, and contractors; and resumption and purchase of land.

Some correspondence related to Public Works administration is also included.

File titles include type of building (for example, Court House), and place; or name of agency for which the building or office work was carried out (for example, Agriculture and Stock). Sometimes buildings were shared by agencies or transferred from one agency to another. During World War II, some buildings were taken over by the armed forces.
