'Education 2000' was the first phase of a discussion, planning, and review process set up by the Department of Education, at the instigation of the Premier, to plan the future of education in Queensland to the year 2000 and beyond. A number of issues associated with the organisational and operational efficiency of Queensland schools and colleges, including curriculum development, staff preparations and management, decision making, communication and the structure of educational institutions, were investigated. These issues were published in a discussion paper titled 'Education 2000: Issues and Options for the Future of Education in Queensland.' The Minister of Education, the Hon. Lin Powell MLA invited all sections of the community to submit topics for discussion. The response was overwhelming and 987 submissions were received. A separate Committee, under Professor Bassett, was formed to review and report on these submissions.
