Section 16 of the "Unoccupied Crown Lands Occupation Act" of 1860 gives the Governor the power to make grants or sales of any land for public purposes or for the public interest.
These volumes contain copies of proclamations of land given as special grants. Purposes for which special grants could be issued include schools, including Grammar Schools, churches, cricket grounds, race courses, Schools of Arts, cemeteries, town halls, hospitals, markets, show grounds, Masonic Halls, Acclimatisation Societies. The proclamations are numbered and are in chronological order. Each register is indexed by location of the special grant, purpose and the person or persons making application.
