Description

This series contains files relating to estates obtained under "the Agricultural Lands Purchase Act of 1894" and its successor "The Closer Settlement Act of 1906".

The "Agricultural Lands Purchase Act of 1894" made provision for the purchase of land suitable for immediate settlement and to facilitate that settlement. Land owners could offer to surrender land to the Crown, and if the land was deemed suitable and a price agreed upon, ownership would pass to the Crown. The land acquired this way became known as estates and would then be subject to survey and possible redevelopment before being opened up for selection.

These files pertain to successful acquisitions and consist of surveyor's field books, plans and accounts, organised by estate. They contain papers and correspondence relating to a variety of matters such as land purchase, subdivisions, school reserves, rivers, swamps, type of soil and proposed roads. Most of the files incorporate detailed maps and plans of the estate. Files may also contain correspondence regarding and involving vendors and selectors.
