Description
The Maternal & Child Health Division of the Department of Health purchased Unara Home at Toowoomba in 1945 to establish a home for mothers and babies with problems. The Division took possession on 19 November 1945 at a cost of 6,250 pounds, together with the furniture for 1,432 pounds and ten shillings. Owing to an extreme staff shortage at its opening, this home did not function properly until May 1947.

Specialised care and attention was provided to babies (with or without their mothers) who, through some problem of feeding or management, required admittance. Full-time supervision or treatment was provided to babies admitted. Unara was also used to train Child Welfare Assistants.

The home was closed on 31 May 1977, despite considerable objections from the community.
