The Environmental Protection Agency was established on 11 December 1998 with the re-naming of the Department of Environment and Heritage. The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service was also established as part of the EPA.

The EPA is responsible for protecting Queensland's natural and cultural heritage, and deals with a wide range of environmental matters including:
protecting air, water and soil salinity
preventing or controlling noise and odour pollution
managing waste
researching biodiversity
managing the state's coastline
managing cultural heritage
promoting sustainable industry
Through the QPWS works to foster sustainable use of natural resources including:
managing parks, forest and wildlife operations
promoting management of conservation areas
managing World heritage areas
promoting nature-based tourism

climate change policy and science - from 13 Sep 2007

Innovation Fund - transferred from State Development Department 13 Sep 2007

In 2001, the Resource Management Group within the Department of Natural Resources was absorbed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This gave the EPA the additional functions of resource management and assessment.

From 13 September 2006 to 13 September 2007 included Multicultural Affairs Queensland

On 26 March 2009, under Administrative Arrangements Order (No. 1) 2009 and Public Service Departmental Arrangements Notice (No. 2) 2009, the Environment and Resource Management Department was established replacing the Department of Natural Resources and Water, and the Environmental Protection Agency.
