Description
ESTABLISHMENT:
The Police Gaol, Toowoomba was established under "An Act for the Regulation of Gaols, Prisons and Houses of Correction in the Colony of NSW and its Dependencies, and for other Purposes Relating Thereto, 1840". In 1891, after the passing of the Prisons Act 1890, the name was changed to HM Prison, Toowoomba. On 14 Sep 1898 the prison was proclaimed a prison for females only.

When the prison closed on 17 Oct 1903 all prisoners (all female), were transferred to HM Prison, Brisbane (Female Division).
