Description
ESTABLISHMENT:
Although proclaimed a prison, HM Prison, Thursday Island was initially a police lockup, staffed by police officers. In 1891, under the Prisons Act 1890, it was proclaimed to be "a public gaol, prison, and house of correction". By calling it a prison, Police could hold prisoners with sentences exceeding fourteen days without having the expense of sending prisoners to the mainland.
