Description
ESTABLISHMENT:
Under the Prisons Act 1890, the HM Prison, Cairns was declared opened, by declaration, on 8 Sep 1897. On the same day, the Herberton Police Gaol was closed and its prisoners were sent to HM Prison, Cairns.

ABOLITION:
On 28 Feb 1925 HM Prison, Cairns was discontinued and closed, by proclamation, and its prisoners were sent to the Stewarts Creek Penal Establishment in Townsville.
