On 3 October 1903 buildings constructed at South Brisbane were proclaimed a prison for females only. This prison became known as the Brisbane Prison, Female Division.

The South Brisbane prison was designed to hold all female prisoners regardless of the length of their sentence. Upon opening, all female prisoners from H.M. Prison, Toowoomba and the Police Gaol, Fortitude Valley were transferred to the new female prison. The latter two institutions subsequently closed on 17 Oct 1903.

In 1982 new facilities for female prisoners were erected at Woolloongabba as part of the Brisbane Prison Complex. Under the "Corrective Services Act 1988" all prisons were renamed as correctional centres.

In 1999 a new Brisbane Women's Correctional Centre at Wacol (next to both the Sir David Longland Correctional Centre and to the newly opened Wolston Correctional Centre), was commissioned to replace the Woolloongabba women's prison, and the Woolloongabba facilities became the Brisbane Women's Remand and Reception Centre. Some time later, the Remand Centre also moved to the Wacol site.

Note: The Sir David Longman Correctional Centre closed in 2005, was refurbished, and reopened in 2008 under the name Brisbane Correctional Centre (II).
