From 20 June 1936, the Townsville Central Boys and Townsville Central Girls and Infants Schools amalgamated to form the Townsville Central State School. After 62 years of separation, the Townsville Central State School once again became co-educational.

Established in 1869, the original Townsville (Central) State School in 1874 erected new buildings to accommodate its rising pupil numbers. Once completed, the girls and infants were moved into their own separate buildings while the boys remained in the original school buildings.
