Description
ESTABLISHMENT:
The position of Crown Solicitor has been in continuous existence in Queensland since 1859; however, the position has not always been accompanied by a Crown Solicitor's Office. The first of these was from the time of the position's establishment in 1859 until the appointment of a Solicitor General in 1922.

From 1922 to 1925 (during the tenure of the first Solicitor General) the Crown Solicitor's Office was replaced by the Solicitor General's Office. When the first Solicitor General, William Flood, resigned his position and was made a justice of the Supreme Court in 1925, the position of Solicitor General became vacant (remaining so until 1937), and on 22 April 1925, the Crown Solicitor's Office was re-instated.

The position of Solicitor General was re-established in 1937 (continuing to the present day); the Crown Solicitor's Office was again abolished, and from 1937 to 1989 the Crown Solicitor was the administrative head of the Solicitor General's Office.

On 23 October 1989 the Crown Solicitor's Office was re-established within the newly created Attorney General's Department. The Solicitor General's Office was redesignated the Crown Solicitor's Office, and a separate Solicitor General' s Office with a smaller staff was created.

FUNCTIONS:
The Crown Solicitor's Office provided legal advice and representation to the Crown, government departments and agencies.

ADMINISTRATIVE STRUCTURE:
Within the Attorney General's Department, the Crown Solicitor administered the following branches through which the Offices's functions were performed: Advisory, Appeals and Advocacy, Common Law and Conveyancing.

ABOLITION:
In May 1991, the Crown Solicitor's Office became the Crown Law Division within the Attorney General's Department (the gazettal notice of staff position redesignations was dated 3 May 1991).

NOTE:
From 12 August 1890 to 13 March 1893, a Solicitor General was the Minister in charge of the Crown Solicitor's Office. From 1922 onwards, Solicitors General were public servants.
