District Courts were established by The District Court Act of 1858 with the Governor-in-Council empowered to appoint districts. The Northern, Central and Southern Districts were established in 1875, with places for holding District Courts within the boundaries of each district.

The Registrar of the District Court at Cloncurry was appointed under The District Courts Act of 1867 on 24 July 1889. The District Court, Cloncurry was discontinued on 18 June 1902, but re-instated on 23 Dec 1910.

Under the 1858 Act, the District Court held original civil jurisdictions up to 200 pounds and original criminal jurisdiction (except in certain cases of capital offences eg murder, treason, in which case they would be heard by the Supreme Court). It was possible to appeal from the District Court to the Supreme Court in criminal matters and in civil matters involving claims exceeding 30 pounds. The District Court also held appellate jurisdiction in minor criminal matters and in civil matters of 10 pounds and over.

Under The Supreme Court Act 1921, District Courts were abolished with effect 31 March 1922 and their jurisdiction transferred to the Supreme Court or Magistrates Court.

Between 1922 and 1959, the Supreme Court took on some functions of the District Courts during this interim period.
